چکیده

A system capable of processing visual information in real-time is a common need for many arti cial vision tasks. Biological vision systems are highly interconnected systems, but it is reasonable to assume that low-level vision operations could be described in terms of independent ltering operations, such as direction detection, disparity and velocity estimation, etc. These functional operators extract speci c raw information, or feature maps, that constitute the basis for higher level processing. The homogeneous structure of the visual cortex suggests that in the human visual system the same computational mechanism is used to realize di erent functionalities. Likewise, in arti cial vision systems, a exible procedure can be used as a common processing tool. Gabor lters are a good candidate for this procedure. The local frequency spectrum of the signal computed by means of Gabor lters can be used to estimate local direction, disparity and optical ow. The choice is theoretically dictated by the fact that the Gabor representation is the best one to simultaneously represent position and frequency. The aim of this project is to design a simpli ed vision system to implement multimodal realtime vision processing using a common set of primitive operators. The Gabor representation of the visual signal is used for depth estimation, optical ow estimation, and local direction extraction. The corresponding modules produce depth, velocity and local-direction maps associated to the input images. In the design of the visual system, we are more concerned in the real-time implementation and integration of the di erent modules than in the realization of a single complex module aimed at exhaustively and completely analyze the single images. In fact, we believe that robustness and reliability of biological { and arti cial { vision systems are mostly based on the integration of the information coming from di erent types of sources rather than on an extremely specialized and precise processing.

Artificial Vision System for Movement Determination of an Autonomous Planetary Exploration Rover based on Discrete Optical Flow and Stereo Geometry

In this paper an artificial vision system that allows an autonomous rover to determine its motion using two stereo cameras is presented. The vision system is based on stereo geometry and discrete optical flow. A tracking algorithm is applied to a couple of images taken from the same camera at different instants of time to find a set of corresponding features on which a discrete optical flow is ...

Cost-effective Stereo Vision System for Mobile Robot Navigation and 3d Map Reconstruction

The key component of a mobile robot system is the ability to localize itself accurately in an unknown environment and simultaneously build the map of the environment. Majority of the existing navigation systems are based on laser range finders, sonar sensors or artificial landmarks. Navigation systems using stereo vision are rapidly developing technique in the field of autonomous mobile robots....

Weakly-Calibrated Stereo Perception for Rover Navigation

In this paper we present a vision system for autonomous navigation based on stereo perception without 3-D reconstruction. This approach uses weakly calibrated stereo images, i.e., images for which only the epipolar geometry is known. The vision system first rectifies the images, matches selected points between the two images, and then computes the relative elevation of the points relative to a ...

Detecting Pedestrians with Stereo Vision: Safe Operation of Autonomous Ground Vehicles in Dynamic Environments

This paper describes an integrated system for real-time detection and tracking of pedestrians from a moving vehicle. We use stereo vision as the primary sensor, and show that this sensor has a number of practical advantages over monocular vision. These include the ability to quickly identify regions-of-interest in an image, classify these regions based on shape, and track detected pedestrians i...
